The General Library consists of the Peter J. Shields Library, the Carlson Health Sciences Library and the Physical Sciences & Engineering Library in Davis, and the Medical Center Library in Sacramento. The Department of Special Collections is the unit of the General Library that acquires, describes, provides access to, and preserves the Library's rare books, manuscript collections, University Archives, and other non-circulating research materials. Special Collections has strong holdings in the humanities and social sciences as well as agricultural technology. For more information about the General Library see http://www.lib.ucdavis.edu <http://www.lib.ucdavis.edu/> and Special Collections at http://www.lib.ucdavis.edu/dept/specol/ Responsibilities: Responsible for the arrangement and description of archival, manuscript, and photograph collections, including the survey and analysis of collection contents, the development and implementation of processing plans, the preparation of descriptive finding aids and catalog entries, and providing for the preservation needs of each collection. Responsible for the department's photograph collections. Provide research assistance to faculty, students, staff and the general public in the Blanchard Reading Room and to reference correspondents as assigned. Review environmental conditions in the stacks and report concerns to the Head of Special Collections. Responsible for preparing and mounting one major exhibit per year. Perform other duties as assigned. Requirements: In depth and demonstrated knowledge of archival principles and methods, including provenance and original order. Demonstrated experience in the arrangement and description of manuscript collections, including large (more than 20 linear feet) collections, required. Technical knowledge of archivist's tools to deliver manuscript information to the Internet such as EAD (Encoded Archival Description), XML, etc. Detailed knowledge of archivists' tools. Experience encoding finding aids using Encoded Archival Description and XML preferred. In depth knowledge of original cataloging tools including SAA's Describing Archives: A Content Standard, MARC, Anglo-American Cataloging Rules and Library of Congress Subject Headings. Knowledge of the history of photograph processes and formats to develop preservation strategies and monitor the condition of the collections. Skill in organizing and assigning priorities in order to meet all quality and quantity standards. Skill in performing assigned tasks with attention to detail. Excellent typing and skills proofreading own work, as well as others. Thorough knowledge of basic preservation techniques for handling and storage of rare books, archival materials, including photographs, magnetic tape, and realia. Analytical skills and knowledge to discern the internal structure of a collection (i.e. series), and to select essential descriptive elements in a collection and use them consistently. General knowledge of academic library procedures. Experience providing reference service in a research or academic library preferred. Knowledge of original research techniques and resources and research skills to provide background and supplement the information contained in collections. Writing skills to compose biographies, organizational histories, collection descriptions (series notes, scope and content notes, etc.), and exhibit materials, and skill to proofread, verify data, and edit text rapidly with a high degree of accuracy. Communication skills to effectively provide detailed information about the department and its holdings and to conduct an effective reference/oral history interview. Ability to train and supervise student assistants preferred. Special Conditions of Employment: Formal archival education, institute certificate, or equivalent required, with demonstrated knowledge of archival principles and methods. No smoking in the building. Physical Requirements: Ability to lift books weighing up to 10 pounds and boxed materials weighing up to 40 pounds. Must be able to reach shelves as low as 5 inches and high shelves, using a ladder, up to 120 inches high. Read and interpret fine print and CRT screens for extended periods of time.
