Hello, A few spaces are still available for the SAA 2006 pre-conference symposium "Ethnographic Archives, Communities of Origin, and Intangible Cultural Heritage" at the Library of Congress, August 2, 2006. The symposium is being held in conjunction with the annual meetings of the Society for American Archivists (SAA) in Washington, DC. This all-day event is co-produced by the American Folklife Center, the Smithsonian's National Anthropological Archives, and the Native American Archives Roundtable of the SAA. The symposium focus should be of considerable interest to you folks on this list. It will explore issues related to managing, preserving, and providing access to ethnographic, multi-format collections, focusing on the special challenges posed by materials pertaining to Native American and indigenous communities. Experts including archives and library professionals, community representatives, and field workers will discuss the practical, political, and cultural challenges involved in curating such collections and the implications of national and international protocols designed to safeguard intangible cultural property. We envision full audience participation and an open discussion of the issues raised by the speakers. Accordingly seating has been limited to 50 and registration may be accomplished via the SAA website for a nominal fee of $115.00. Please connect to the following link in order to register for the SAA pre-conference workshop ONLY: http://archivists.org/prof-education/workshop-detail.asp?id=1859. A reading list and other information is available at: http://www.loc.gov/folklife/SAASymposium/symposium.html. Our roster of speakers includes Suzan Shown Harjo, Morningstar Institute; Jane Sledge, NMAI; Michael Brown, Williams College; and Karen Underhill, Northern Arizona University. These individuals will be speaking at the National Museum of the American Indian in the morning. Following that session, a workshop at the Library, led by AFC processing and archives staff, will provide attendees with insights on 'best practices' in the care and maintenance of ethnographic, audio-visual collections. The program concludes with consecutive panel discussions, the first featuring Rob Leopold, NAA/HSFA; Ken Bilby, SI Associate; Margaret Mills, Ohio State University, and Linda Barwick, Pacific and Regional Archive for Digital Sources in Endangered Cultures. The second panel session includes Jennifer Walele, Historian, State Department; David George-Shongo, SNI Archives and Native American Archives Roundtable; Susan Secakuku, Secakuku Consulting, Hopi, AZ; and Alvin Windy Boy, Sr. Tribal Historic Preservation Officer, Chippewa Cree Tribe. Hope to see some of you there. Guha Shankar A posting from the Archives & Archivists LISTSERV List sponsored by the Society of American Archivists, www.archivists.org.
