Please post all responses to Bob's inquiry on the Listserv--I think
others are interested in hearing the responses. This is a good question
which many of us get asked.

Subject: Digitize and then to microfilm vs. Microfilm and then digitize

Dear Listservians:

We are contemplating outsourcing a project, the end result of which is
a microfilm (35mm rolls) and digitized (tiffs and pdfs) of the
documents. Do any member of the list have opinions they would like to
share, based on personal experience in similar projects, of whether it
is better to film first and scan the film or to scan the materials and
produce microfilm from the digital product. I have been reading about
the theoretical factors, so I am most interested in hearing from anyone
who has actually gone through the process or has opportunity to compare
results of the processes. How, in your opinion, do the final results of
the two processes compare in terms of readability for the researcher
sitting in front of the computer or microfilm reader and in terms of the
preservation quality of the microfilm.

Thanks for your help.
