Intergalactic Archivists~

Please read the excellent question that Amy Russell of the Alaska State
Archives staff raised. In Alaska library reference information is protected
by Title 40.21.125 Alaska Statutes, and this statute was invoked in one
deposition proceeding in which three state archives staff were interviewed.

Larry

Does the patron's permission excuse us from the confidentiality statute that
we're bound by, though?
If it does, that sounds like a good idea to me, and I can change the
registration form.

On our registration form, which all our users read and sign, is a line which
reads:

Do you want your work to remain confidential? Yes No
Above it is a line that reads:
(If neither "yes" or "no" is checked for either or both of the next two
lines, the Archives staff will assume that you meant to check "no.")

If the patron wants her/his work to remain confidential, it is. If she/he
does not, we inform other researchers working in the same area as occasion
arises. It is often very helpful to both parties.

Next time we replenish our copies This caveat would be useful.
