NEH Grant to Fund Digitization of Cervantes Project Collection The Cushing Memorial Library and Archives, a division of the Texas A&M University Libraries, is a partner in an NEH-funded grant to create a hypertextual archive of the illustrations of the Don Quixote. The project draws on the Eduardo Urbina Cervantes Project Collection in the Cushing Library, which contains over 500 hundred editions and many additional volumes related to the Quixote, ranging from 1573 to the present. This project is led by Eduardo Urbina, Professor of Hispanic Studies and Director of the Cervantes Project, Richard Furuta, Professor of Computer Science and Director of the Center for the Study of Digital Libraries, and Steven Escar Smith, Director of the Cushing Library. The $605,000 NEH grant will enable the digitization of thousands of illustrations that have appeared in the Quixote since its first publication in 1605 as well as the development of tools to help scholars and students analyze these images. "This project is a great example of using digital technology to promote and provide greater access to a rare book collection," says Smith. "In fact, the development of this electronic resource will in effect create a new collection, one based in bytes instead of books, that will enable the further study and appreciation of one of the world's great works of literature."
