Description
Chemist and entrepreneur Jonas Kamlet, Ph.D. (1914-1960)
developed numerous inventions and patents during his short career. Among his developments were a tablet
used to measure glucose levels in urine and a test strip for the detection of
pregnancy. After his untimely death
in 1960, Kamlet’s wife and collaborator, Edna, continued the work of Kamlet
Laboratories until her retirement in the late 1970s.
The
Jonas and Edna Kamlet (Kamlet Laboratories) records consist of printed and
artifactual materials primarily created under the auspices of Kamlet
Laboratories. Spanning
approximately 250 linear ft., the records include, but are not limited to,
Kamlet’s patent development and corresponding research, research and work
towards the development and/or analysis of chemical processes and professional
correspondence.
The
Archivist assigned to this project must be able to re-house, process (arrange
and describe) and take appropriate measures towards the preservation of this
collection. Under the guidance of
the Head Archivist and the Director of Special Collections, the Archivist also
will: facilitate bibliographic access to the collection through the creation of
finding aids (to include EAD); develop a web presence specifically dedicated to
Jonas Kamlet and Kamlet Laboratories; and take the lead on the promotion of and
access to the collection. The
Archivist also may engage in other, related projects as identified and
assigned.
Qualifications
Required:
High school diploma plus 2-5 years archival work experience. (Appropriate coursework may substitute
for work experience.)
Preferred:
Previous experience processing archival collections and creating finding
aids. Bachelor’s or Master’s degree
in archival science, library science or related fields or a degree that includes 18
hours in archival science, library science or related fields. Educational or professional background
in the physical sciences, preferably chemistry. Experience creating online exhibits.
