Archives, libraries, museums - I've spent 32 years working in them all. I've never yet worked somewhere that we didn't have a "disaster." Toxic fumes from swimming pool paint stored in the basement of a city building, sewer gas leaks that nearly knocked staff unconscious, sub-basement storm drains backing up and flooding collections storage areas, floodwaters from local creeks that shut a major university library down and ruined its entire serials collections, asbestos contamination, mold and "sick building" syndrome, tornado scares and theft and vandalism leaving the collections open to the elements -- and more thieves and vandals. Then, of course, the run-of-the-mill trashcan fires, bomb threats, and broken pipes. Naaahh, I wouldn't worry about something as unlikely as a "disaster."
