The Special Collections Research Center (SCRC) seeks candidates for the
position of Processing Archivist (Term Appointment, 3 Years).  The SCRC is
the principal repository for rare books, manuscripts, and archives in the
University of Chicago Library.  The collections support teaching and
research at the University of Chicago in a broad range of humanities and
social science disciplines. Information about the collections is available

Responsibilities:  Under the direction of the Head Processing Archivist, the
Processing Archivist provides processing for archives and manuscripts
collections.  Works with colleagues to support the Library’s and national
hidden collections initiatives by contributing to the development and
implementation of strategies, standards, and programs for making available
the broadest possible range of archives and manuscripts collections in all
formats.  Manages student staff assigned to processing.  Participates in
establishing priorities for the archives and manuscripts unit. Works with
colleagues to extend and maintain the Special Collections EAD program.
Supports archives and manuscripts collection development activities;
participates in reference and other programs of the Special Collections
Research Center.  
 
Qualifications: Masters degree from an ALA-accredited program required; a
minimum of two years of related archival and manuscript experience required;
supervisory experience preferred.  The ability to conceptualize and organize
large collections in diverse formats; ability to meet processing goals and
deadlines; knowledge of MARC format, APPM, and other standards for
description of manuscript and archival materials; familiarity with EAD DTD
for digital encoding of manuscript and archival finding aids; excellent
writing skills; judgment and discretion; excellent communication and
interpersonal skills including ability to interact with donors; and the
ability to work effectively and collegially across units and departments are
all required.
 
Salary and Benefits:  Appointment salary will be based on qualifications and
experience.  Benefits include a contributory retirement plan, health and
life insurance, paid time off including vacation, University Holidays,
personal holidays, and sick leave.  There is a tuition benefit plan for
college age and younger children.
