I was going to ask: is the person in question living or dead? If
deceased, it's not necessary to redact the SS# -- it's public
information anyhow.

This brings us a very interesting point. There are several websites that
list everyone in the U. S. who died with a Society Security Number and
who received benefits. The site is use is www.familysearch.org. There
are others. If someone needed a S. S. # that had been redacted from a
manuscript file, and the person in question was dead, that person would
probably find it at this or other websites.
