Although it makes sense to tackle the issue of preserving the digital images, there is one way to side-step the issue -- _require_ that B&W photos be taken.  That is still the gold standard for long-term preservation, and when you are talking about something like  archeology, you want to be _sure_ that you will have a record that will last.  Historic building surveys are still required to be submitted on B&W film; aren't your projects just as important?
