Digital Librarian [Ref. 06-LIB-01]
Senior Assistant Librarian.
Tenure-track. 12-month position. Archives and Special Collections and
Technical Services Departments. Incumbent will serve as resident authority on existing and emerging
metadata schemas; catalog digital objects selected for the Library; ensure
quality control on digital objects in the Library; and create and maintain
Metadata Best Practices documentation. Incumbent will also be responsible for
cataloging materials in all forms through OCLC; assisting the Department of
Archives and Special Collections with collections; the Archives Website; some
reference duties; and assisting Library Computer Network Services. The
incumbent will supervise students and support staff and serve on Library and
campus committees. The Incumbent will: collaborate with Archives, subject
specialists, catalogers, and faculty or staff to select appropriate schemas for
descriptive, structural and administrative metadata and authority controls for
Digital collections; catalog
digital objects from our Special Collections and campus wide resources in all
formats for dissemination in CONTENT dm; participate on Library campus
committees to establish policies, guidelines and best practices task force for
Digital Collections; maintain documentation on applying metadata schemas and
authority controls; perform second level quality control on all digital objects
created for the Library; participate in departmental and libraries-wide
committees and work groups; contribute to providing user services, including
reference service, archival processing and Computer Network Services. Qualifications: ALA-accredited MLS, or MLIS (required for Librarian
appointment) or three years experience cataloging (preferably digital objects);
familiarity with AACR2r, MARC21, DACS, CONTENT dm; understanding of authority
controls like LCSH, TGM, AAT, LCNA, ULAN, etc.; knowledge of metadata schemas
such as Dublin Core, EAD, VRA, METS, MODS, MADS, and/or PREMIS; advanced
computer skills, and experience with Microsoft Windows 2000 and XP operating
systems and commonly-used productivity applications; effective communication,
planning, time management and organizational skills; ability to work independently
and in a team environment; adeptness at working in a rapidly
changing technological environment. Preferred
Qualifications: Two or
more years experience cataloging book, archival or digital objects; knowledge
of how digital library collections are used in an academic setting; experience
with digital asset management systems; familiarity with best practices for
digitization of primary resources and awareness of copyright laws and rights
management issues in a digital environment.
