Archival Assistant
 
The Menil Collection is seeking an archival assistant to support the overall
operations of the Menil Archives and provide administrative assistance to
the Archivist. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: management
of departmental written and telephone communications and clerical duties,
including scheduling meetings and appointments with staff and outside
patrons for reference requests, ordering and maintaining inventory of
archival materials and supplies, and accounting; management of patron
requests, which includes research, photocopying archival materials,
maintaining patron forms and files, and recording statistics; assistance
with grant writing; organization and maintenance of archival records, which
includes sorting documents and maintaining box content lists, organizing
files and database inventory for Film and Media Collection; maintaining
archival databases, which includes analyzing records to create finding aids.
 
 
Considered one of the most important privately assembled collections of the
twentieth century, The Menil Collection houses approximately 16,000
paintings, sculptures, and prints, drawings, photographs, and rare books.
Masterpieces from antiquity, Byzantium and the medieval period, the cultures
of Africa, Oceania, and the American Pacific Northwest and the twentieth
century, including significant surrealist holdings, are particularly well
represented.  The Menil Archives contains Menil Foundation and museum
departmental records, a Film and Media Collection, and Special Collections.
 
 
A bacheloršs degree in art or art history, information science, library
science, or a related field and knowledge of information systems and digital
records technology strongly preferred.  At least two years of general office
or library/archives experience with clerical and research skills, writing
and verbal communication skills, and organizational and interpersonal
skills. Experience using Macintosh computer systems and software, including
Microsoft Word and FileMaker Pro systems. Ability to lift forty-pound boxes
and climb ladders for retrieval of materials.
