Interesting article. There was one similar in Sunday's Houston Chronicle (about Rice Village area losing independent shops to chains - changing the face of the area.) http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/nb/bellaire/news/4113434.html It's interesting to me that both newspapers ran the same type article on the same Sunday. While at SAA, my husband and I ate at Cosi and Johnny Rockets and never knew they were a chain. We thought they were local places. We have never heard of them!! Both were very good! We also ate at Odeon Cafe (who could pass up that sandwich sidewalk sign advertising lobster wtih pasta for $16.97!) I enjoyed it very much. Overall, I could really see the appeal for people to live in that area, though I never saw a grocery store, and it pained me to see that we missed the Sunday farmers market. The Super Shuttle drove us past it and I had this huge "D'oh" moment that we didn't walk down there earlier that morning.
