Magnes Museum, Berkeley, California Date posted: August 19, 2006 Application Deadline: September 20, 2006 The Western Jewish History Center, a research center dedicated to preserving the history of the Jewish community's experience and history in the thirteen western states and part of the Judah L. Magnes Museum, in Berkeley, California, has an opening for a part-time (20 hours per week) processing/reference archivist. Responsibilities: Under the supervision of Western's Archivist, the Processing/Reference Archivist will provide intellectual access and help arrange, describe, and re-house the Center's archival collections and the Museum's institutional records. Extensive description of the materials is required with finding aids to be created at collection level. Initially, the inventories will be made in Microsoft Word and then converted to EAD. Catalog entries will also be made initially in Microsoft Word before being converted to MARC and put on NUCMC. In addition, the Processing/Reference archivist will modify/create catalog records so that the records may be put in the Museum's KE EMu database. The Processing/Reference Archivist will also implement basic conservation methods and answer reference inquiries about the Center's collections. Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: Knowledge of MARC, AACR2, and LCSH. Knowledge of entering catalog records in OCLC and EAD a plus. Familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel required. Knowledge of basic preservation practices. Excellent organizational skills. Ability to organize collections of varying sizes, work independently and still function as a member of a small department and a museum team, climb ladders, and lift boxes. Education and Experience: Bachelors required. Masters in Library and/or Information Science/Services with an archival specialty/focus from an ALA-accredited program preferred. Knowledge of American history and/or interest in American Jewish history a plus, but not required. Experience in processing manuscript collections. Experience in cataloguing in MARC and EAD formats preferred. Experience doing reference and research work strongly desirable. Museum experience also a plus.
