The University of Texas at Arlington Library seeks a customer-focused, service-oriented individual to serve as Public Service Librarian/Archivist in Special Collections.  The Public Service Librarian/Archivist coordinates activities supporting public service in Special Collections and serves as the primary point of contact between the program area and the various communities of library users and potential users regardless of their location.  The Librarian/Archivist manages the operations of the Special Collections public service area and provides information services and instruction in the use of information resources.

Duties include keeping abreast of and keeping staff apprised of new reference sources and tools, both print and electronic; providing bibliographic instruction to classes; giving tours and presentations to visitors; promoting the use of the collections by speaking to groups; working closely with Information Literacy program area staff to promote information literacy programs and develop the quality of instruction provided by Special Collections; creating subject guides to support research and instruction; coordinating Special Collections' participation in virtual reference; assisting with the selection of books, graphics, media, and reference tools; participating in planning processes; and hiring, training, and supervising student assistants.

Required Qualifications:  ALA-accredited master’s degree, or master's degree in history (or related discipline) with nine hours of coursework in archives administration

Preferred Qualifications:  Experience providing public service in a library, special collections, or archives; experience working in a special collections environment; training or education in archives; background in history (especially Texas history); supervisory experience; experience providing bibliographic instruction; experience working with and selecting library resources. The Certified Archivist credential is preferred for applicants without a master's degree in library and information science.

Minimum Salary:  $35,000 Annually

Special Collections:  The UTA Library's Special Collections program area collects and provides access to historical materials in all formats relating to Texas, the U.S.-Mexican War of 1846-1848, the cartographic history of Texas and the Gulf of Mexico, and Mexico during the period 1810-1920.  Special Collections' holdings include approximately 50,000 volumes, 8,000 linear feet of manuscript and archival collections, 4 million historical prints and negatives, 5,000 historical maps, and thousands of items in other formats.  Special Collections has a staff of ten FTEs, including archivists, librarians and paraprofessionals.  In addition, Special Collections employs a varying number of students each semester.  The home page for Special Collections can be found at : http://library.uta.edu/spco/
