Ethical grant writers do not ask for a percentage. They charge an hourly or flat fee. Grant agencies and foundations would not fund such an expense and they would look very unfavorably on awarding funds to an agency who conducted business in this way. It is also unethical for professional fundraisers to ask for a percentage of the campaign proceeds. In the archives/museum/history/library field, an independent contractor or consultant would charge $25 to $75 an hour. Typical charges average $40-60 an hour.
