Volunteers are, for all practical purposes, employees who just happen to not be paid. My understanding from my experience here is that a volunteer's "employer" is liable for worker comp, if the volunteer is injured on the job, and the volunteer must comply with the same rules, regs and standards as any paid employee, as to sexual harassment policy, security practices, use of employer computer systems, dress code, safety practices, etc.

Sedgwick County practice is to apply escalating discipline to all employees: counseling, oral reprimands, written reprimands, suspensions, on up to termination -- all documented. Of course, the whole list does not always apply -- if someone physically assaults another employee or commits some other illegal act, we do not have to start with counseling and work up step-by-step -- we may go right to calling Security, arrest by law enforcement, prosecution, and suspension/termination. Most organizations should have HR policies and practices in place to guide supervisors in applying discipline. It is always a good idea to consult with HR and follow its SOP -- that's what the organization's legal counsel should be prepared to defend.

Subject: volunteer question

Hi all,
I need to fire a volunteer and I would like suggestions on how best to
handle this situation especially since I am doing this because of the
volunteer's of increasingly aggressive and disruptive behavior. Please
respond off-list if you have had to deal with a similar situation. I can
compile the responses and post them later without attribution, if anyone
else is interested.
Thanks,
Julie

"A frank and honest effort in classrooms to face up to the darkest side of
our past, to understand the ways in which social evils evolve, should in
no way lead to cynicism and despair or to a repudiation of our heritage.
The development of maturity means a capacity to deal with truth. The more
we recognize the limitations and failings of human beings, the more
remarkable and even encouraging history can be." David Brion Davis
