Ed Murrow, eh? Hmmm, that's something to think about. Thanks for the
good laugh, Peter, you have NO idea how much I needed one, just then.
LOL.

For Peter and the List,

See
http://www.nandotimes.com/nt/images/century/photos/century0275.html
for the famous picture of President Truman and Lauren Bacall in 1945,
simply credited at that site to AP. The piano now is in the Truman
Lounge, see
http://www.press.org/library06/archivesfaq.cfm

I notice the Truman Library doesn't display the image of HST and Bacall
on their website, stating it is "copyright restricted." See
http://www.trumanlibrary.org/photographs/view.php?id=18338

Any of you copyright experts out there (which I'm definitely not) able
to explain why the Truman Library was careful not to post the pic but
the other website (Nandotimes now appears to be defunct) was able to
(or believed it could) display it?

Just wondering, figure someone here would know.

wouldn't the smoke and odor be considered an intrinsic part of the
room and the materials. that would mean destroying the ambiance of the
room used by journalists such as Ed Murrow?

Rather than trying to clean the room and artifacts yourself you may
want to considere hiring a company such as BMS-CAT who have expertise
in cleaning up after fires (smoke is smoke).

that said, you may also want to conduct a cost//benefit analysis to
find out how much it will cost to do the remediation and how long?
Would you really want to spend several hundreds of dollars or
thousands on an artifact that has a low value?

Unless the carpet is unique you may just want to totally replace
including the padding underneath. Cleaning the carpet will not remove
the odor that has sunk into the padding

just some thoughts from an ex-smoker
