JOB SUMMARY: The Washington National Records Center (WNRC) is a modern brick building located on a well-landscaped Federal complex in Suitland, Maryland just outside the southern boundary of the District of Columbia.

MAJOR DUTIES: You will serve as an Archivist to provide agency advisory services, and perform transfer and processing, description, reference, and preservation assignments for the Washington National Records Center.

Assists customer agencies in developing effective records management programs which include effective records management policies and procedures..  Provides training for Federal officials based on extensive knowledge of records schedules in general.  Reviews and provides input on records control schedules and appraisal reports to the customer agencies and to the Modern Records Programs, Division of Life Cycle Management (NWML). Recommends and drafts  appropriate disposition guidelines for customer agencies and coordinates those schedules with NWML appraisal archivists.  Assists customer agencies in effecting the transfer of legal custody of records to the National Archives of the United States. Assists customer agencies in effecting the transfer of physical custody of records to the Washington National Records Center.  Develops plans for processing records and resolves problems in the transfer process.   Assists customer agencies in accomplishing difficult descriptive work.  Conducts critical analyses and applies extensive judgment in accomplishing work.   Assists customer agencies in developing a finding aids program that facilitates discovery and use of a complex body of records.  As necessary, leads a team of lower graded archives technicians and archives aids who may be indexing records to assist a customer agency in establishing intellectual control of a collection or body of records.  May lead a team of WNRC employees who are providing services in packing or organizing a collection of records in preparation for transfer to NARA or the WNRC.   As necessary to assist customer agencies, identifies preservation and conservation needs in records collections in the agency's physical custody.  Evaluates physical condition of records, recommends projects, and assists in planning or carrying out projects.
