Dear Chicago (and surrounding) Area Archivists,

On October 6, 2006, the Chicago Area Archivists is sponsoring an
Archives Month Open House at the National Archives-Great Lakes to
connect historical researchers and educators with local archival
repositories. The goal for the open house is to increase and sustain the
use of archival and manuscript collections by researchers who may not be
aware of our holdings and our knowledge.

The open house is being offered on Friday evening, October 6, 2006, from
4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. The date on the first Friday in October and
evening time will allow professors, teachers, students, and the working
public to attend. Many the college and graduate research seminar classes
are just beginning to send their students out to repositories to learn
with varying degrees of preparation beforehand. A Society of American
Archivists workshop will also be held in Chicago that day:
"Understanding Photographs: Introduction to Archival Principles and
Practices"

908
<http://http://www.archivists.org/prof-education/workshop-detail.asp?id=

The location of the open house will be the National Archives and Records
Administration-Great Lakes Region at 7358 South Pulaski Road on
Chicago's Southwest Side. The Chicago Area Medical Archivists will
sponsor its Medical History Symposium at the National Archives-Great
Lakes Region earlier that morning and afternoon. The National
Archives-Great Lakes Region preserves more than 78,000 cubic feet of
historically valuable archival records of the U.S. Government from six
Midwestern states: Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and
Wisconsin.

The Chicago Area Archivists Steering Committee hopes that professors and
secondary teachers will require their students to attend the Archives
Month Open House as a class assignment, and that those professor and
teachers will also attend. The National Archives staff will be working
to attract potential researchers to the open house from other cities
within driving distance, including Milwaukee, Indianapolis, and
Springfield.

Archival and manuscript repositories are invited to provide staff at
information tables at the Archives Month Open House at the National
Archives-Great Lakes Region. There will be about 15 tables measuring 7
1/2 feet by 2 feet and about 10 tables measuring about 5 feet by 3 feet.
Additional space for a small floor-standing exhibit panel is negotiable,
based upon the number of archival institutions participating.
