Thanks for the link about Rice Village, Shelly. What an evocative
article, I enjoyed it. Funny how newspapers in two very different parts
of the country wrote about the same issue on Sunday. I would love to
see Variety Fair, it sounds like the stores I grew up with. I miss the
5&10 cent stores that dotted the Washington area when I was growing up
in the 1950s and 1960s. Woolworth's, Neisner, Kresge, McCrory, all long
gone now, although Woolworth's hung on longer than the others in this
area.

The writer of the article in the Houston Chronicle is correct in saying
there was more texture and character to commercial districts before
everything became so standardized. For those interested in 5&10 cent
stores of old, I recommend this history of Woolworth's, Karen
Plunkett-Powell's REMEMBERING WOOLWORTH'S:

Glad you enjoyed the restaurants in the Dupont Circle area, Shelly. I
didn't eat at any of them, spent my lunch breaks nipping over to my
office (a few stops down Metro's Red Line at Judiciary Square) or
running errands (one of the disadvantages of being a local rather than a
visitor, LOL). I missed out on some socializing during SAA, darn it,
because I was trying to juggle the conference with some of my routine
obligations.

Interesting article. There was one similar in Sunday's Houston
Chronicle (about Rice Village area losing independent shops to chains -
changing the face of the area.)
http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/nb/bellaire/news/4113434.html
It's interesting to me that both newspapers ran the same type article
on the same Sunday.

While at SAA, my husband and I ate at Cosi and Johnny Rockets and never
knew they were a chain. We thought they were local places. We have
never heard of them!! Both were very good!
We also ate at Odeon Cafe (who could pass up that sandwich sidewalk
sign advertising lobster wtih pasta for $16.97!) I enjoyed it very much.
Overall, I could really see the appeal for people to live in that
area, though I never saw a grocery store, and it pained me to see that
we missed the Sunday farmers market. The Super Shuttle drove us past it
and I had this huge "D'oh" moment that we didn't walk down there earlier
that morning.

Subject: Somewhat OT: Dupont Circle neighborhood, a look at changes

On a lighter note, to those who have access to the print or online
Washington Post, please check out the interesting look at the changing

face of the Dupont Circle neighborhood. SAA conference attendees might

be interested in reading this account of the area near the Hilton Hotel

where the meetings were held.
