New-York Historical Society Library

 

Collection Description

The Here is New York Collection consists of over 100 linear feet of photographic prints, digital files, and institutional records including release forms, press clippings, and correspondence that document the exhibition of amateur and professional photographs at a gallery in SoHo shortly after September 11, 2001 as well as subsequent exhibitions and related projects.  This collection was donated to the New-York Historical Society by Here Is New York.

 

Job Description

The project archivist will arrange, describe and help to re-house the collection in accordance with archival standards, including: create a brief history of the “Here Is New York” organization, based on the available collection material and interviews with the principals of the organization; create archival series within the collection (photographic prints, office files, exhibit ephemera, digital files, etc.); create a MARC record and finding aid for the collection; help to establish an on-site work station to be used by researchers viewing the digital collection; serve as liaison for short-term issues regarding this collection that affect the museum division and the department of rights and reproductions at N-YHS; recommend options for current and future storage and maintenance of digital files; create an internal document that describes copyright and use issues, including descriptions of related materials held by other institutions.

 

Qualifications

M.L.S. from an A.L.A.-accredited library school or M.A. in history with an archival concentration or archival management certificate. Two years of archival experience, preferably in an institutional archives. Experience using MARC format, Encoded Archival Description (EAD) and encoded text application in general (SGML, XML, HTML). Experience working with non-print formats, including knowledge of current technology and industry standards relating to digital formats. Dedication to archival principles, practices and ethics. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to work independently and collaboratively with other departments and individuals. Ability to lift 40 pound record boxes.

 

Salary:                        $38,000-42,000
