Just to add to Maarja's post, the photo posted on Nandotimes.com either wasn't caught by AP or they paid for the rights (I looked into it for our website but it cost too much for the rights). As for the "Truman" piano, the piano that now sits in the Truman lounge is known as the Truman Piano because it is the piano that appears in the photo. In truth, if you look at the piano in the photo and the piano that sits directly below the photo, you will notice that the two pianos don't match. From what I've gathered, the club took the insides of the "Truman" piano and put them in the shell of another piano that the club had on hand. So technically, it isn't the same piano even though the club still claims that it is the same. There are a few members that are upset about it but not enough to change the story. Also, to clarify my original post, I will be cleaning only the objects/artifacts on display. The walls, carpets and furniture will be either replaced or cleaned by a professional company. The carpet and furniture is recent and has no real value other than a place to sit with your Jack Daniels and a cigar. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Christina J. Hmmm, that's something to think about. Thanks for the good laugh, Peter, you have NO idea how much I needed one, just then. LOL. For Peter and the List, See http://www.nandotimes.com/nt/images/century/photos/century0275.html for the famous picture of President Truman and Lauren Bacall in 1945, simply credited at that site to AP. The piano now is in the Truman Lounge, see http://www.press.org/library06/archivesfaq.cfm I notice the Truman Library doesn't display the image of HST and Bacall on their website, stating it is "copyright restricted." See http://www.trumanlibrary.org/photographs/view.php?id=18338 Any of you copyright experts out there (which I'm definitely not) able to explain why the Truman Library was careful not to post the pic but the other website (Nandotimes now appears to be defunct) was able to (or believed it could) display it? Just wondering, figure someone here would know. Rather than trying to clean the room and artifacts yourself you may want to considere hiring a company such as BMS-CAT who have expertise in cleaning up after fires (smoke is smoke). that said, you may also want to conduct a cost//benefit analysis to find out how much it will cost to do the remediation and how long? Would you really want to spend several hundreds of dollars or thousands on an artifact that has a low value? Unless the carpet is unique you may just want to totally replace including the padding underneath. Cleaning the carpet will not remove the odor that has sunk into the padding just some thoughts from an ex-smoker -- Peter Kurilecz CRM CA Richmond, Va A posting from the Archives & Archivists LISTSERV List sponsored by the Society of American Archivists, www.archivists.org.
