The General Society of Mechanics and Tradesmen has cherished its historical
records since its founding in 1785 by the master craftsmen of New York City,
but few outsiders have seen more than published materials and typewritten
excerpts. In 2002, field archivists from the Robert F. Wagner Labor
Archives at New York University uncovered a treasure trove of records from
1785 to the present. The collection was processed in 2005 with a grant from
the National Historic Publications and Records Commission.

Learn how a documentation strategy forged in 1984 brought forth this rich
archival resource. Tour the General Society’s historic building, get a
glimpse of selections from the archival collections, and learn more about
what these records can tell us about the city’s past.

Janet Greene is Historian and Director of the Library of The General Society
of Mechanics and Tradesmen of the City of New York. Before assuming this
post in 2003, Dr. Greene was Director of the Harry Van Arsdale Labor History
Documentation Project at the Robert F. Wagner Labor Archives at New York
University’s Tamiment Library. Her goal at the General Society has been to
make the rich history of this organization’s library and archival
collections available to researchers, and to begin to interpret that past
for the public.

Brenda Parnes is a Regional Advisory Officer for Region 1, New York City,
the New York State Archives. Dr. Parnes has a Ph.D. in history from NYU and
is the former archivist for the United Federation of Teachers at the Wagner
Labor Archives, NYU. She will speak on the importance of documentation
strategies in the past and future. Her talk is entitled "The Value of
Documentation Studies (mental health, history of the environment, Latinos,
9-11) based on the Experience of New York State Archives."

Dr. Michael Stoller is Director of Collections and Research Services at the
NYU Libraries and was acting director of the Wagner Archives at the time the
documents that now make up the GSMT Archives were discovered.

Tours of the Mossman Lock Collection will be conducted by the curator, John
Erroll. Dr. Erroll is also the Chair of the Library Committee, a member of
the Board of Governors of the GSMT, and co-author of American Genius:
Nineteenth Century Bank Locks and Time Locks, forthcoming in October.
