Position:  Head, Preservation Department*

*Environment*: Serving 20,000 students, the University of Delaware 
provides a broad range of academic programs at the undergraduate, 
master, and doctoral levels. The Library makes accessible a broad range 
of electronic resources, including more than 40,000 full-text electronic 
journals, 240 databases, and 16,000 videos. Library collections include 
2.7 million volumes. The Library has 200 public access workstations, 200 
laptop connections, and wireless access. The Library is a member of the 
Association of Research Libraries, the Center for Research Libraries, 
CIRLA, and PALINET. More information about the Library is available

*Description*:  Manages the preservation program for the collections of 
the University of Delaware Library comprised of the Morris Library, the 
main library, 4 branch libraries, and an on-campus storage facility. 
Manages an emerging, high-profile program to digitize selected library 
materials. Duties include: supervising five production operations: 
Digitization; Conservation; Bindery Preparation; Shelf Preparation; and 
Brittle Books (4 full-time staff members plus student assistants); 
working with staff in other units to plan and implement digitization 
projects related to library materials using CONTENTdm digital collection 
management software; working with other library units to establish and 
maintain effective workflow, quality, standards, and procedures for 
identifying, evaluating, and routing materials for preservation 
treatment; conducting staff training and appropriate user education 
regarding preservation issues; coordinating disaster preparedness and 
response; monitoring environmental conditions; establishing and 
maintaining effective relationships with service suppliers and vendors; 
representing the Library in national and regional preservation forums; 
and working with the Special Collections Department to coordinate 
outsourcing of items for conservation treatment. Reports to the 
Assistant Director for Library Collections. 

*Qualifications*: ALA accredited MLS. Minimum 3 years professional 
experience in an academic library or research environment. Strong 
supervisory and oral and written communication skills. Demonstrated 
ability to manage complex production operations. Ability to establish 
and maintain effective working relationships with library staff at all 
levels. Working knowledge of digitization practices and procedures, of 
preservation techniques for library materials, and of the practice of 
preservation.

*Salary:* Rank and salary dependent upon experience and qualifications.
