We do not allow any scanners or digital cameras of any kind in our
reading room.  From what I have heard, so do many other archive
repositories.  One of the many reasons we do this is to protect the
materials from being damaged.  Another reason that I have heard
archivists say is that this helps bring in money that many small
archives and special collections don't have but desperately need.
  I am sure there are many other reasons for or against researchers
doing their own scanning.
