The following are archival events for September 11-18 as taken from the
Archivist's Daybook <http://www.southwestarchivists.org/HTML/Daybook.htm>.

-----

Sept 11 Read an archivist's perspective on the events of September 11, 2001.

Sept 11-12 The Alum Meeting; Newcastle upon Tyne.

Sept 13 On this date in 1975, the Bureau of Canadian Archivists (Bureau canadian
des archivistes) held its first meeting.

Sept 13 SOLINET workshop, "Basic Digital Stewardship;" online class.

Sept 13-20 The annual seminar of the Section on University and Research
Institution Archives of the International Council on Archives; Reykjavik,
Iceland.

Sept 14 The American University hosts a discussion on "Checks and Balances:
Classified Information versus the Public’s Right to Know" in honor of
Constitution Day; 3-5pm, Abramson Family Recital Hall, Katzen Arts Center.

Sept 15 On this date in 2004, an ordinance went into effect at the Huntington
Public Library, California, that banned cell phone use involving talking, text
messaging, and ringing tones in a public library. The city ordinance allowed
librarians to issue citations on the spot rather than calling the police. First
time offenders will be warned; $250-$500 for second time, and $1,000 for third
time. Yes!!

Sept 15 Deadline for presentation proposals for the conference, "Taking a Stand:
A Conference on Activism in Canadian Cultural Archives." Will be held June
12-14, 2007, in Ottawa.

Sept 15 Submissions due for the Brenda McCallum Prize, presented by the American
Folklore Society's Archives and Libraries Section for an exceptional work
dealing with folklife archives or the collection, organization, and management
of ethnographic materials. Contact: Marcia K. Segal, American Folklife Center,
The Library of Congress, [log in to unmask], (202) 707-2076 (fax). For a list of
past recipients and their research topics, go to
http://www.afsnet.org/sections/archives/prize.cfm.

Sept 17 Constitution Day; United States. Prior to the upholding by the US
Supreme Court of the US Patriot Act in 2001, it was generally believed that the
US Constitution protected the privacy rights of US library and archives users by
shielding library and archival use records from government search without a
warrant. That is a constitutional protection United States citizens no longer
have. See the American Library Association's "Resolution on the USA Patriot Act
and Related Measures that Infringe on the Rights of Library Users."

Sept 18 On this date in 2003, the National Archives of Australia officially
announced the establishment of the Ian Maclean Award, an award to fund research
benefiting the archival profession and promoting the important contribution that
archives make to society. The award is open to archivists from all countries.
Prospective applicants should contact Derina McLaughlin, +61 2 6212 3986 before
lodging their application to discuss the scope of their research project.
Further information about the award and stipend can be found on the National
Archives of Australia website.

The Archivist's Daybook is another service to the profession of the Society of
Southwest Archivists (<http://www.southwestarchivists.org>). In it you will
find information about continuing education and professional development
opportunities for archivists around the world through 2009.

We welcome the opportunity to promote your archival event and especially
encourage non-North American archival meeting planners to list their event with
us (there is, of course, no charge for listing your event in the Archivist's
Daybook). Please help us promote your event by letting us know
<[log in to unmask] Daybook> of your meeting, seminar, or
workshop by emailing [log in to unmask]
