Background Information: The Dorothy M. Vaughan collection of
manuscripts, family papers, photographs, books, ephemera, and museum
objects is an outstanding resource for the study of Portsmouth, N.H. and
greater Piscataqua Region history. The collection dates from the
mid-18th century to the present and contains thousands of items in one
hundred forty boxes. Dorothy M. Vaughan died in 2004 at the age of 99
and donated the vast majority of her collection to the New Hampshire
Historical Society. In 2004 the Society completed a preliminary
inventory of the collection with a grant from the Greater Piscataqua
Charitable Foundation. The current phase of this project, which is being
generously supported once again by the Greater Piscataqua Charitable
Foundation, is guaranteed for twelve months with the possibility of an
additional eight more months.  

Duties: Working an average of 20 hours per week on a flexible schedule
for fifty weeks the Project Archivist will be responsible for the
processing of the Dorothy M. Vaughan Collection, working in cooperation
with the librarian, special collections librarian, director of
collections and exhibitions, museum registrar, and volunteers. As a part
of the processing of the collection, the Project Archivist will perform
basic storage improvement and collections care, recommend further
conservation treatment for, or disposition of, individual items, as
needed, create a detailed finding aid for the collection, and assist
with object cataloging. 

Qualifications: Experience processing large, complex archival
collections and knowledge of the history of the Piscataqua region
preferred.  Knowledge of archival principles and practices and strong
computer skills required.  A Master of Library Science with a
concentration in archival studies or a masters degree in a related field
preferred but not required. Graduate students currently enrolled in an
archival studies program are encouraged to apply. 

Salary: $14,400. No additional benefits. The successful candidate will
be considered a consultant and paid semi-monthly.
