The Van Wert Reservoirs were alive with waterfowl about 5 PM today. Probably 400-500 birds congregated on the east shore of the north reservoir, including Common Loons, 8 (all adult males in breeding plumage) Pied-billed (a few) and Horned Grebes (many, some males already in breeding plumage) Coots, 15 Scaup species, probably 200-300 (I was on the west shore - hard to tell which species, maybe both) Common Merganser (maybe 20, males & females) Red-breasted Merganser (about 30-40, males & females) Redheads (20 or so, males & females) Ring-necked Ducks (50+) Ring-billed Gulls, 30 Herring Gulls, 5 South reservoir, new area: Common Loons, 3 (males) Double-crested Cormorants, 5 Ring-billed Gulls, 15 Red--breasted Merganser, several males Horned Grebes, 6 Didn't have time to walk around and sneak up on them, so a scope was necessary, especially on the enlarged south reservoir.
