Hi all, Registration is now open for the annual OOS conference, to be held once again in the heart of the fabulous Mohican State Forest near Mansfield, Ohio. The dates are May 16-18, and those of us that were there last year will remember the great birding and beautiful scenery. Mohican is especially noteworthy for its cool, deep, steep-sided hemlock gorges that support rare boreal breeders like Canada Warbler and Winter Wren. All of the field trips should be productive, and once again, the ever-popular bat expert Merrill Tawse has agreed to lead nocturnal excursions for his favorite flying mammals. Last year, we caught a number of bats in his mist nets and were treated to wonderful up close studies. OOS member and stellar astronomer Michael Packer will also treat us to star-gazing, weather permitting. We are especially pleased to host Dudley Edmondson of Duluth, Minnesota as our Saturday evening keynote speaker. A former resident of Columbus, Ohio, Dudley has long roamed North America in his career as a professional wildlife photographer. He is a leading proponent of encouraging minority participation in birding and other nature pursuits. In addition to his awesome skills with a camera, he is an exceptionally nice guy and very generous in sharing his knowledge. Dudley will be talking about his adventures in Nome, Alaska, and it'll be filled with his wonderful imagery. Check him out further at: http://www.raptorworks.com/ Friday night speaker is Dana Bollin, who will present an interesting program on the impacts of climate change on birds. This is a subject very much on people's minds and Dana's talk should be quite interesting. Finally, our Saturday afternoon speaker is none other than Bill Thompson, editor of the Ohio-based Bird Watcher's Digest. Bill is without doubt one of the most entertaining speakers in the bird world, and this talk is titled "No Child Left Inside", based on Bill's new book "The Young Birder's Guide to the Birds of Eastern North America". We'd love to have you be a part of the conference, and join the fun. All of the details can be found at: http://www.ohiobirds.org/ Hope to see you there!
