Subject: Call for Authors on U.S. Temperance Movement

Facts on File, the nation's largest reference work publisher, in
association with two scholars, John R. McKivigan and Heather L.
Kaufman, will publish a two-volume encyclopedia, The Encyclopedia of
American Reform Movements, in the press's Library of American History
Series. This new work will examine popular movements for social,
economic, and political change throughout U.S. history. The Editors
will recruit contributors to prepare entries from among the leading
academics in the various social science disciplines as well as those
in the fields of history, philosophy, and American Studies. This
interdisciplinary focus is intended not only to make the Encyclopedia
useful to a broad range of scholars and students but also to produce
entries of interest to the widest possible reading audience.

The Encyclopedia will consist of two volumes, each approximately
250,000 to 300,000 words long, with entries ranging in length from 500
to 5,000 words. While incorporating the most up-to-date scholarship,
each entry will be written to emphasize clarity and accessibility for
high school and first-year college readers. The Editors are seeking
entry authors with backgrounds in a wide range of humanities and
social science disciplines. Preferences in making assignments will go
to potential contributors with advanced education and a publication
track record in the area of the entry subject, but some shorter
entries might be available to authors in the process of completing
their graduate degrees.

The Encyclopedia with be composed of twenty chapters. One of these
will be devoted to the Temperance Reform Movement. Of the orginally
contemplated fourteen entries for this chapter, eight remain
unassigned. The editors seek scholarly contributors for the following
entries:

1. Introductory Overview Essay on Temperance Movement, 5K Words

2.  The Unintended Consequences of War on Drugs (1969-Present)    ,
featuring discussion of Prison Overcrowding, Linkages Drawn between
Drug Policy and Foreign Policy, Drug Law Decriminalization, and NORML,
"Medical Marijuana," etc., 1-2K Words

3. NORML Founded to Campaign for Marijuana Law Reform (1970), 500-1K

4. The Intersection of Temperance and Health Reform, Public Education
Reform, Progressivism, and Religious Benevolence, 2-5K Words

5. The Debate over the Future of Temperance Reform, focusing on Issue
of State Authority v. Personal Autonomy Debate in Continuing Debate
over "Drug" Decriminalization,  2-5 K Words

6. Alcohol/Drug Abuse Gains Legitimacy as a Social Problem, examining
Status Conflict/Status Politics Theory/Social Control Theory,
