The July issue of the Auk contains the 49th Supplement to the AOU Check-list. It is not yet on line, but will be soon, at http://aou.org/checklist/index.php3 . Few of the most anticipated changes have appeared (see a summary of these at http://aou.org/committees/nacc/proposals/pending.php3 , where a much longer version is available by calling up the PDF). For North America, species have been added, nothing subtracted. The flamingo has been moved up after the grebes. Changes affecting the Ohio list are even fewer. The hyphen has been removed from what is now the violetear. Research has resulted in a rearrangement of the taxonomic order among the gulls, and a number of them formerly in the genus Larus have been returned to older names in accordance with taxonomic principle. Here is the revised list of Ohio gulls: Rissa tridactyla Black-legged Kittiwake Pagophila eburnea Ivory Gull Xema sabini Sabine’s Gull Chroicocephalus philadelphia Bonaparte’s Gull Chroicocephalus ridibundus Black-headed Gull Hydrocoloeus minutus Little Gull Rhodostethia rosea Ross’s Gull Leucophaeus atricilla Laughing Gull Leucophaeus pipixcan Franklin’s Gull Larus heermanni Heermann’s Gull Larus canus Mew Gull Larus delawarensis Ring-billed Gull Larus californicus California Gull Larus argentatus Herring Gull Larus thayeri Thayer’s Gull Larus glaucoides Iceland Gull Larus fuscus Lesser Black-backed Gull Larus hyperboreus Glaucous Gull Larus marinus Great Black-backed Gull True, they're not as easy to pronounce or spell as "Larus," but those are the cards we're dealt. If you're working on anything for publication, take account of these. And practice your Greek.
