Went for my weekly trip to Magee today (Thursday). Not a great day, but still not bad. Ten warbler species & 5 Vireo species, plus Summer Tanager & others. When I finished there I went down ti Benton-Carrol. There was a small flock of Semipalmated & Piping Plavers, about 6-8 & a single Short-billed Dowitcher. Plus about 30 Dunlins. Then I went to Ottawa NWR. I saw very little, but then I only drove around the main roads. Next I went to the junction of Stange & Krause Roads, where there is a lookout near a pond. Saw only about 12 birds, 1 Lark Sparrow, 1 Mockingbird, 1 female Yellow-headed Blackbird, 2 Tree Swallows, 2 Goldfinches & the rest were Crows. Not bad for a 10 minute stop. I then went to the gate in Veler Road. As it was getting late & I was tired, I didn't walk over to the pond. However, I did see several sandpipers flying, probably Pectoral Sandpipers. Since I could only see maybe 20% of the pond, there may well be many more shorebirds. Metsker Marsh was next. Again, I didn't see much: 1 Gallinule & 2 swans, with at least 3 Cygnets between them. They were probably Trumpeters, but they were way across the lake & I didn't have a telescope with me. I next stopped at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, on Elliston Toad, just East of Bono. Just West of the parking lot there is a shallow lake. A bunch of sandpipers were at the fat end, too far for me to identify. They were, however, small, medium & large in size. You'll need a telescope there as well. One did fly down my way, landing behind some small building. It was a Black-necked Stilt. Finally, I stopped at Maumee Bay State Park. By the Golf Course, in some tall grass, were 2 hens & a cock Pheasant. On the beach at Inland Lake were many gulls, a few terns & 1 Caspian Tern. That's enough for today, V.
