Little Blue Heron: One remained at Ottawa NWR, in Pool MS 8b, 8 Aug (Jim Witter). American Avocet: Three visited Conneaut Harbor 2 Aug (Craig Holt, Mark Vass) and a juv 5 Aug (Greg Emmert, Craig Holt) was joined by another bird that evening (Lana Hays). Three were notable at Clear Fork Reservoir 3 Aug (Su Snyder, m.ob.). Ottawa NWR’s Pool 2A hosted one 8 Aug (Jim Witter). Willet: Craig Holt and Mark Vass saw a bird at Conneaut 2 Aug. Upland Sandpiper: One was calling from the field west of the Toledo Express Airport 1 Aug (Matt Anderson). Whimbrel: Rick Asamoto was lucky enough to view one at Buck Creek SP’s beach 5 Aug. A bird passed Conneaut 7 Aug, but didn’t touch down (Bob Royse). Red Knot: A bird touched down briefly at Pipe Creek WA 1 Aug (Emil Bacik, Gabe Leidy). White-rumped Sandpiper: Willow Point WA hosted an adult 1 Aug (Emil Bacik, Gabe Leidy) and Conneaut Harbor another 5 Aug (Craig Holt). Baird’s Sandpiper: Emil Bacik observed birds at Willow Point WA 8 Aug and Pickerel Creek WA 10 Aug. Buff-breasted Sandpiper: Brian Zwiebel identified one in a photo he took at Ottawa NWR’s Pool 2A 3 Aug. Long-billed Dowitcher: Emil Bacik identified a bird at Pipe Creek WA 1 Aug.. Wilson’s Phalarope: Pickerel Creek hosted two birds 1 Aug (Emil Bacik, Gabe Leidy) and another 10 Aug (Emil Bacik). Red-necked Phalarope: The season’s first showed up at Pickerel Creek WA 10 Aug (Emil Bacik). Black Tern: One remained at Knox Lake 1 Aug for Charlie Bombaci. Yellow-bellied Sapsucker: Craig Holt observed one in Ashtabula 5 Aug - in Monroe Twp. at Root Rd. covered bridge. These northeastern breeders have been reported seldom this summer. Sedge Wren: Up to five singing males have been present at Miami-Whitewater Wetlands (Steve Bobonick, W. Travis Young). Blue Grosbeak: A pair remains along Jeffers Rd within Oak Openings MP, across from the Horse Riders parking area (1 Aug - Matt Anderson). Armleder Park, near Cincinnati, continues as a reliable spot (Kirk Westendorf, John Zahnen).
