Yesterday (Saturday) I banded three female Northern Saw-whet Owls ... two adults and one juvenile. It was between 8:30-9:30 pm in the general vicinity of the Clear Creek Metro Parks parking lot. These are most likely winter stopovers and should be around, as well as many others, through January/February. If you plan to attempt calling one in after dark, expect to wait at least an hour. Then, you will have to see them as they don't typically sing in the winter (at least not in the eastern U.S.). There are exceptions! They are very curios and do investigate calls they hear! As you may know, many owls sing quieter as they get closer fooling you into thinking they are farther away. Saw-whets are experts at directional calling just by turning their head. IF you are lucky enough to hear one, it may seem that it is farther away but it could be over your head looking right at you.
