Greetings! I had enough of working so in honor of a new working year at H., I decided to take a mental wellness day and go birding. I first started off at Greenlawn Cemetery...at dawn...almost as spooky as dusk. The owls are doing great, When I was there, one of them was out of the nest...It spent the entire time I was there trying to get back in...it succeeded. :-) After it got back in, they settled down for a nap. I then decided to hit the bridge. While there I saw: A hermit thrush or two. They were at different ends of the bridge so I think that it was two separate birds. At least four if not more Teeny Tiny little Winter Wrens...I thought at first they were mice until they flew away. :-D I FINALLY got to see a Sapsucker...two actually, male and female. Male was drinking water from a puddle, Female was nipping at magnolia blossoms. I think I got a decent picture of the female. Brown Creepers were scattered throughout. Towhees, male and female. Robins Flickers Jays Cardinals Juncos White Throated Sparrows Carolina Chickadees doing the see bee-see bay song. Another of my life birds with good picture was knocked off the list, again FINALLY! A Golden Crowned Kinglet. ( I have two lists, those I've seen, and those that I have gotten a good picture of.) and a Pheobe. So that is 3 lifers in the cemetery this morning. Went to the pond/pit, nothing new to add to the list above. Except a Downy. I then went over to Blendon Woods and got almost face to face with a couple of Turkeys. They were at the nature center in the bird feeder area, As I was coming in the observation room, I saw them and nearly screamed...I wasn't expecting them. ;-D Got some good closeups though. I then started to make my way home...I went to Innis Gardens, nothing new to add, a titmouse or two, and a bluebird. Then I hit both ends of Glacier Ridge as the sun was beginning to turn orange...still haven't seen that Barred Owl...I think I heard it today though. The wetlands end is VERY wet. This is where I got baffled today. Someone asked me to help in ID'ing a duck and I just couldn't figure it out. They thought that it was a merganser of some sort, but the bill wasn't right. So I got an ID picture and put it on the OOS website: http://www.ohiobirds.org/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=3748 I'm 90% sure that it is a Female Long-tailed Duck...which would be another lifer for me. Also while there I saw: 4 Coots 1 Pied Billed Grebe Like I said...a Good Monday to end my long Good Friday weekend. :-D See you out there! Steve Jones (sjlarue) Psalm 104:16-17 (ESV) 16The trees of the LORD are watered abundantly, the cedars of Lebanon that he planted. 17In them the birds build their nests; the stork has her home in the fir trees. ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
