Some interesting summer birds I've recorded the last few days.........in the Lowellville/Poland Twp. area (Mahoning Co.): calling barred owl, e. wood-pewee, Acadian flycatcher, white-eyed vireo, veery, wood thrush, scarlet tanager, and purple finch. A common nighthawk was heard in Youngstown last weekend. Yesterday I went atlasing in Ashtabula Co. again. Along Conneaut Creek were 2 imm. bald eagles, belted kingfisher, ruby-throated hummingbird, e. wood-pewees, Acadian flycatchers, red-eyed vireos, blue-gray gnatcatcher, wood thrush, 2 cerulean warblers, Am. redstarts, hooded warblers, and scarlet tanagers. Green heron was seen at a wetland in Kingsville. I made a brief stop at Conneaut harbor; there will be decent habitat for migrating shorebirds there again this year. Birds were relatively few but did inlude 4 bald eagles, spotted sandpiper, purple martins, and brown thrasher. Quite a bit of the phragmites have been cut down on the spit. The sand "road" out to the spit has been nicely graded and is easy to drive right now. I also did some atlasing in the Jefferson/Lenox Twp. area yesterday and found green heron, 2 Am. kestrels, e. kingbird, ovenbird, savannah sparrows, bobolink, and e. meadowlarks out there.
