Pat Hayes, Paula Bartlett, and I conducted the 13th August Kelleys Island census today. Weather was typical but the island appeared to be fairly quiet. 58 species were observed which is slightly below the 13 year average of 62 species. However, the 5256 individuals is almost double an average count for August. Again, gulls seem to be up in numbers. New for an August census were Northern Pintail, Rock Pigeon, and Hermit Thrush. Missing species usually observed were Belted Kingfisher, Common Yellowthroat, and Brown-headed Cowbird. 52 Canada Goose 54 Mallard *1 Northern Pintail* 17 Double-crested Cormorant 8 Great Blue Heron 2 Great Egret 7 Turkey Vulture 1 Bald Eagle (3rd year) 1 Cooper’s Hawk 2 Killdeer 4 Spotted Sandpiper 155 Bonaparte’s Gull 3115 Ring-billed Gull 601 Herring Gull 2 Great Black-backed Gull 7 Caspian Tern 1 Common Tern *1 Rock Pigeon* 2 Mourning Dove 3 Yellow-billed Cuckoo 1 Eastern Screech-Owl 11 Chimney Swift 3 Ruby-throated Hummingbird 11 Downy Woodpecker 1 Northern Flicker 4 Eastern Wood-Pewee 1 Eastern Phoebe 58 Eastern Kingbird 2 Warbling Vireo 3 Red-eyed Vireo 1 Blue Jay 15 American Crow 73 Purple Martin 16 Tree Swallow 1 Northern Rough-winged Swallow 3 Bank Swallow 367 Barn Swallow 42 Black-capped Chickadee 2 Carolina Wren 2 House Wren 1 Eastern Bluebird *1 Hermit Thrush* 60 American Robin 1 Gray Catbird 196 European Starling 38 Cedar Waxwing 11 Yellow Warbler 4 Chipping Sparrow 1 Song Sparrow 41 Northern Cardinal 13 Indigo Bunting 12 Red-winged Blackbird 33 Common Grackle 2 Orchard Oriole 37 Baltimore Oriole 6 House Finch 48 American Goldfinch 98 House Sparrow *58 species* *5256 individuals* Bold = Unusual species * = observed on island but not on census route -- H.
