Chris's report sums up the awesomeness that was Pipe Creek today...the habitat here is ideal, and I know of no shorebird spot as hot statewide. The grassy flats in the corner of Unit B are ideal for Baird's/Buff-breasted/golden-plover. Other Pipe highlights included Northern Shoveler (13 - a circling flock), Black-crowned Night-Heron (15), Long-billed Dowitcher (ad), and Bobolink (15 - including a flock of 12). There were shorebirds and other birds obviously on the move here, today... There remains no shorebird habitat at Pickerel...all flooded and ready for teal season. However, the following locations are shaping up better - especially note Lorain: - Cedar Point Causeway - common shorebirds - decent habitat created by north winds - Huron River flats - ditto & ditto - 38 Lesser Yellowlegs, etc. - Lorain Impoundment - dredging occurred here about a week ago - shorebird habitat is currently excellent - common shorebird sp. plus Black-bellied Plover & Ruddy Turnstone Work at Lorain has turned reverted this area to one large impoundment...worth a check. It was pretty cool as six of them were in one group. Also, a second Baird's came in and provided some excellent plumage comparison's to the first bird ( it was paler overall). Throw in a lot of shorebird diversity, a hunting Peregrine, and a Little Blue Heron, to name a few, and Pipe Creek rocked. The ONWR Auto Tour was very low key. The only decent visible shorebird habitat was on the north side of the bridge at Crane Creek. A grand total of 3 shorebird species was seen there. It is unfortunate that for the last few years, shorebird habitat has been pretty non-existent along the auto tour routes. See you on the trails, Chris Pierce N. Highlights include FOUR Red-necked Phalaropes, a single Willet, and a single Baird's Sandpiper... Gabe will post his end-of-day results later, I'm sure. cheers Jen Jen Brumfield [log in to unmask] Cleveland, Ohio 330-701-6452 www.jenbrumfield.com ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
