In a recent class discussion about French imperialism in Indochina a professor of mine brought up three monopolies controlled by the colonial government: Salt, Opium, Alcohol. My own research has been focused on beer and alcohol through imperialism and gender in world history and I am looking for more information about the alcohol production and trade in French Indochina. If anyone could recommend any sources I would very much appreciate it. Specifically, I am looking for information on alcohol and its role in Indochinese/Vietnamese society under colonial rule, the production, consumption and trade of alcohol between France and her colonies. Sources dealing with greater networks of alcohol trade and policy are also very welcome. Thank you.
