The Columbus Audubon trip to the winter waterholes along the Scioto found that most of the river from Griggs dam down to Greenlawn dam was open; only the still water above these two dams was frozen over. As a result, many of the waterbirds were spread out along the river, but we were still able to log some good finds. We stopped at Griggs dam and the park below the dam, Marble Cliff/Riverside and its adjoining bikepath, and Berliner Park. Notable birds included: Trumpeter Swans - the 3 were still along the river below Griggs, but were only seen by a few members that got there early. The birds flew south along the river. Gadwall - 1 below Griggs dam, literally Red-breasted Merganser - 1-2 at Marble Cliff Ring-necked Ducks - 2 at Marble Cliff Common Goldeneye - mixed flocks of males & females at Marble Cliff and Berliner Common merganser - 2 males on the river below Griggs dam Hooded Mergansers - small numbers at all stops Pied-billed grebes - 4 at Griggs, another 2 at Marble Cliff Cormorant - 3-4 on the river at Berliner Park, below Greenlawn dam Great Blue Herons - no big flocks, but 6-8 below each dam Bald Eagle - 2 different first-year juveniles along the river in Berliner park Red-tailed hawks - a pair below Griggs dam, and another 1 at Marble Cliff Belted Kingfishers - 1-2 at every stop Brown Creepers - 2 along the bikepath at Berliner park Golden-crowned Kinglet - a very cooperative bird along the trail below Griggs dam. ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
