Now that February is behind us, a new Franklin County year list is posted at http://www.columbusaudubon.org/production/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=634&Itemid=216 or if you can't remember that, go to Columbus Audubon, then Groups, then Avid Birders, then Franklin Co List. As predicted, February produced what might turn out to be the smallest monthly total, 6 species. But they were good ones, and our pace is more than satisfactory. The total is 108, and dramatic growth is ahead. In summary, some hoped-for birds were of course missed, but there are chances to see them still: golden eagle, sandhill crane, crossbills, and black-capped chickadee, greater scaup (details requested for the last two). During March it would be great to tick northern saw-whet and barn owls, and eared grebe, along with the many new early migrants appearing. We'll need the scoters. Eared grebe would be nice (again, details requested). Phasianidae like ruffed grouse and bobwhite are much desired, as they are like hen's teeth for the county these days. Thanks to all helped with this collective effort. As always, if you wish the location of a species to remain confidential--beyond "Franklin County" of course--say so and it'll remain so.
