My wife and I stopped by the Heins' residence just south of Woodsfield around noon today. The Bullock's Oriole made his appearance just after we arrived. Beautiful bird! Thanks to Martie and Bob for their hospitality! Then, feeling lucky (and it having turned into a beautiful day), we decided to take a long-shot trip up to NE Knox County to see if we could spot the Common Raven reported by several observers last month. We spent about 1-1/2 hours driving the general area of the roads named in the previous reports (College Hill Rd., Koppert Rd. and Reed Rd.). At about 5:30 I spotted the raven sitting in a tree at the edge of a pasture lying between College Hill and Koppert Roads, just east of the Y-intersection where the two roads join. We had great looks at the raven through our scope. There were two crows sitting in the same tree giving him grief. We watched him for about 10 minutes, then he flew off out of site to the south. All in all, a great day of twitching! Ken Beers ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
