Dear Township Officials:

First let me apologize for the delay in getting you the information below. We had power/computer issues yesterday and this is the first chance I have had to send you this alert. This will be your last alert for the week, as I will not be in the office tomorrow. HOWEVER, if the Governor vetoes any of our township provisions in HB 153, we will send you an alert.

SB 5 UPDATE:
Petitioners (coalition group called We are Ohio) delivered over 1.2 million signatures to the Secretary of State's office on behalf of an attempt to repeal SB 5, the collective bargaining reform bill. The Secretary of State will now put in motion the process of determining the validity of the signatures and if the petitioners have met the signature threshold of 231,147, or 6% of the total votes cast governor in 2010 and at least 3% in 44 of the 88 counties. This will put a stay on the enactment of SB 5 until the signatures can be validated.

HB 153 UPDATE:
The House adopted the conference committee report by a vote of 59-40 yesterday and so the bill has been sent to the Governor for his signature. The Governor has the ability to line item veto any of the appropriation items in the bill so we will know later today if any of the township items are vetoed.

The appropriation measures in the bill will generally be effective tomorrow and the majority of non-appropriation items will be effective in 90 days. However, there are some sections, like the repeal of the estate tax, will be effective January 1, 2013. We will send you a list next week with the effective dates of each of the sections relating to townships/township government.

OTHER LEGISLATIVE NEWS:
HB 194 Election Reform - To revise the Election Law.
Bill passed House and Senate and was sent to Governor yesterday.
HB 229 Agriculture Laws - To revise the laws governing agriculture.
Bill passed House and Senate and was sent to Governor yesterday.

State Fair - OTA Sponsored Awards:
The OTA is looking for volunteers to assist us at the 2011 Ohio State Fair. Did you participate in 4-H growing up? Travel back to your youth by volunteering to present clock trophies and other awards at this year's Ohio State Fair. The OTA sponsors numerous awards each year and at least two volunteers are needed each day. The award presentations for this year's state fair will take place July 26 - Aug. 7.

Specifically, we are looking for volunteers on the following dates:
Thursday, July 28
Monday, August 1
Wednesday, August 3
Thursday, August 4
Friday, August 5
Saturday, August 6
Sunday, August 7

If you are interested in presenting an award, please contact OTA Board of Directors State Fair Committee Chair Shirlee Bostdorff, at 419-265-0057 or [log in to unmask] or me at the State Association. The OTA includes photos and a summary of the awards, as well as thank you letters from recipients, in the OTA magazine.
