Steve Henthorne, Paula and I conducted the 14th August census yesterday. Beautiful weather but things were very quiet. We had 58 species and 2872 individuals on the census. Both of these numbers are slightly below our 14 year average of 62 species and 3303 individuals. The most unusual sighting of the census was a Rock Pigeon which is very uncommon on the islands. The only Brown-headed Cowbird observed was a young bird following a Killdeer around in a short grass field near the marina. I find it hard to believe a Killdeer incubated a cowbird egg... 181 Canada Goose 54 Mallard 109 Double-crested Cormorant 7 Great Blue Heron 1 Great Egret 8 Turkey Vulture 2 Osprey 1 Bald Eagle (adult) 11 Killdeer 1 Spotted Sandpiper 1 Sanderling 49 Bonaparte's Gull 362 Ring-billed Gull 341 Herring Gull 6 Caspian Tern 1 Rock Pigeon 7 Mourning Dove 1 Yellow-billed Cuckoo 1 Chimney Swift 5 Ruby-throated Hummingbird 14 Downy Woodpecker 1 Northern Flicker 9 Eastern Wood-Pewee 1 Yellow-bellied Flycatcher 1 Great Crested Flycatcher 16 Eastern Kingbird 5 Warbling Vireo 4 Red-eyed Vireo 2 Blue Jay 34 American Crow 23 Purple Martin 15 Tree Swallow 4 Northern Rough-winged Swallow 356 Barn Swallow 25 Swallow species? 30 Black-capped Chickadee 2 White-breasted Nuthatch 4 Carolina Wren 5 House Wren 141 American Robin 3 Gray Catbird 338 European Starling 43 Cedar Waxwing 34 Yellow warbler 1 Chestnut-sided Warbler 2 Black-and-white Warbler 2 American Redstart 9 Chipping Sparrow 52 Northern Cardinal 4 Indigo Bunting 25 Red-winged Blackbird 218 Common Grackle 1 Brown-headed Cowbird 2 Orchard Oriole 46 Baltimore Oriole 18 House Finch 19 American Goldfinch 212 House Sparrow 58 species 2872 individuals -- H.
