On Sunday, October 16, 2011, Tom Behlen, Pat Hayes, and myself conducted the 14th October monthly census on Kelleys Island. We started the day with 10-15 mile per hour winds out of the south-southeast, 54 F, and overcast skies. These skies soon turned to rain for most of the census. Even with the weather, we had an excellent day ending with 59 species and 3904 individuals. The species count was above the 14 year average of 58 species but the individual count was well below the 5343 average. New species for the October count were Philadelphia Vireo and Tennessee Warbler. Unusual species were a late Cape May Warbler and Ovenbird. Surprising misses were Great Blue Heron, Sharp-shinned Hawk, Mourning Dove, Gray Catbird, and White-crowned Sparrow. 146 Canada Goose 3 Wood Duck 106 Mallard 2 Wild Turkey 1 Common Loon 3 Horned Grebe 160 Double-crested Cormorant 5 Turkey Vulture 3 Bald Eagle 1 Cooper’s Hawk 1 Merlin 4 Killdeer 1 American Woodcock 14 Bonaparte’s Gull 1032 Ring-billed Gull 116 Herring Gull 250 Gull species? 2 Eastern Screech-Owl 2 Red-bellied Woodpecker 7 Yellow-bellied Sapsucker 30 Downy Woodpecker 29 Northern Flicker 3 Eastern Phoebe 2 Philadelphia Vireo 9 Blue Jay 71 American Crow 102 Black-capped Chickadee 1 Red-breasted Nuthatch 1 White-breasted Nuthatch 5 Brown Creeper 6 Carolina Wren 9 Winter Wren 25 Golden-crowned Kinglet 7 Ruby-crowned Kinglet 2 Eastern Bluebird 256 American Robin 11 European Starling 14 Cedar Waxwing 1 Tennessee Warbler 1 Orange-crowned Warbler 732 Yellow-rumped Warbler 27 Western Palm Warbler 1 Ovenbird 191 Warbler species? 2 Eastern Towhee3 3 Chipping Sparrow 1 Field Sparrow 6 Song Sparrow 2 Lincoln’s Sparrow 2 Swamp Sparrow 301 White-throated Sparrow 4 Dark-eyed Junco 35 Sparrow species? 65 Northern Cardinal 2 Red-winged Blackbird 26 Rusty Blackbird 24 Common Grackle 4 House Finch 4 American Goldfinch 22 House Sparrow 59 species 3904 individuals Tom Bartlett H.
