This morning I stopped to check on the Black-crowned Night Heron at Oxbow Road in the Hoover Nature Preserve. It continues to roost in a small tree that sits in the water on the south side of Oxbow Road as it enters the preserve. The tree is about 30 feet out and the heron is about 20 feet up. While there Tom and Jackie Bain drove up and my neighbor, Skip Decker joined everyone. Another couple (senior moment - I forget their names) was there when I returned from scoping waterfowl from Oxbow Island. The heron just sat there and paid no attention to us silly birders. Waterfowl observed from Oxbow Island include Canada Geese, Mallard, American Black Duck, Redhead, Ring-necked Duck, Lesser Scaup, Bufflehead, Hooded Merganser, Red-breasted Merganser, Ruddy Duck, Pied-billed Grebe and Horned Grebe. My FOY Tree Swallows were seen at the small pond off Sunbury Road at the Medallion Golf Course. For the unproud, there is a Mute Swan by the basin above the Dam at Hoover Reservoir.
