I spent an hour at each of these parks along the Olentangy River corridor this morning searching for migrants with some success. At Antrum I took the riverside trail, but the dense brush probably screened me from many warblers. At Highbanks, I took the Coyote Trail, which was much more open and allowed me better views of most migrants, so the list from Highbanks is longer. Notables included: Waterfowl - no unusual ducks, but Antrum did have a Pied-billed Grebe & 5 cormorants Raptors - nothing unusual, but I did see a Black Vulture in the vulture roost at Cremeans Water Plant (Morse Rd east of I-270) Hummers - 2-3 at each park, so they're still around in numbers Flycatchers - pewees still abundant, with 8 at Antrum and 7 at Highbanks. Antrum also had a Phoebe and Great Crested, while Highbanks had Least & Willow Flycatchers Swallows - zip, nada, nil Vireos - 2 Warbling were singing at Antrum, while Red eyed were numerous (3 at Antrum, 6 at Highbanks) Red-br.Nuthatch - at least 1 was calling along the eastern loop of the Coyote Trail Wrens,Gnatcatcher - still only Cariolias & House, with 2+ of the latter at each park. At least 1 Gnatcatcher was still at Antrum Lake Thrushes - Swainsons ascendant, with 5 at Antrum and 3 at Highbanks. Highbanks also had a Veery. Mimids - Catbirds were the only mimid, and no great #s of them (5-6 at each park). Cedar Waxwings - flocks of 15-20 at each park Warblers - still no picnic. Antrum only had 4 species (Redstarts,Black-thr.Green, Blackburnian, Black-thr.Blue), while Highbanks had 8 (Parula, Tenn, Magnolias, Black-thr.Green, Blackpoll, Bay-br., Redstart, Wilson's) Sparrows - nothing unexpected Buntings,Grosbeaks - a single Indigo Bunting was at Antrum Blackbirds - virtually none, with only a few grackles at each park. ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
