Larry Gara and I were at the end of a very dull check of Cowan Lake (four species). We were at the spillway where I was scanning for ducks, when Larry said, "Hey, what's that?" I looked up and saw a huge raptor, all dark underneath, dark tail, big honking bill, flat wingset. It was not far away, just above the trees on the far side of the spillway. It turn and glided away, but it was clearly a first year (SY) bird. Larry's rehabbed 90-year-old had done it again. We get one or two eagles at Cowan every year, almost always subadults. They are usually one-day wonders. This one was a beauty.
