Yesterday, Wednesday, at approximately 11:00 AM, I andtwo other birders watched the American White Pelican take flight and gainaltitude, then fly out of sight to the north, likely leaving Hoover Reservoirfor better pastures. Today Linda and I checked Hoover Reservoir at the dam,Oxbow Road and the boardwalk at Area M. There was a nice variety of waterfowlspread from the dam north to Galena. Buffleheads were present in excellentnumbers with one raft of almost 60 individuals. Red-breasted Mergansers werealso in high numbers and the number of Common Loons seems to be increasing daily. The resident Bald Eagles are on their nest as are the Osprey, and newerarrivals included several Phoebes and Great Egrets, the latter resplendent intheir frilly breeding plumage. Currently at the eBird website, ProthonotaryWarblers have now been reported as far north as North Carolina. In two weeks, maybe less, the Prothonotary warblers will be back at Hoover Reservoir. Acomplete list of today’s observations follows.
